How to Get the Most From Your Bridal Look Design Session
Everything to know before we create your wedding-day lookYour Bridal Look Design Session is one of the most exciting parts of preparing for your wedding. It’s the moment when all those saved photos, ideas and inspiration start becoming your bridal look.At Katherine Art Makeup, we call it a Bridal Look Design Session rather than simply a trial because that’s exactly what it is: a collaborative session where we design, refine and personalise your hair and makeup for the wedding day. Here’s how to prepare so you can get the most from your appointment.
1. Bring Inspiration — But Don’t Feel Like You Need to Choose One Look
Pinterest and Instagram are wonderful starting points. Save makeup and hairstyles you’re naturally drawn to, even if the images are quite different from each other. You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what you want.During your session, we’ll look at the common elements in your inspiration and consider your features, hair, dress, wedding style and personal preferences to create something that works specifically for you.Sometimes knowing what you don’t like is just as helpful, so feel free to bring those examples too.2. Think About How You Normally Wear Your Makeup
Your wedding day probably isn’t the day to suddenly become someone completely different. If you rarely wear makeup, an extremely glamorous look may feel overwhelming. If you love full glam, very minimal makeup might not feel special enough.Tell us what you normally wear, what you love about your everyday makeup and what you would never normally choose. Our goal is for you to look elevated, polished and beautiful — while still recognising yourself when you look in the mirror.3. Consider the Whole Wedding, Not Just the Inspiration Photo
A bridal look should work with everything around it.Bring photos of your wedding dress if you have them, and tell us about your venue, ceremony time, jewellery, veil, flowers and overall wedding style.A soft outdoor ceremony, a formal ballroom wedding and a destination wedding can all call for slightly different approaches to hair and makeup. We also consider practical details such as the Queensland climate, humidity, your hair type and how long your look needs to last.4. Arrive With Clean, Dry Hair
Unless we’ve advised you otherwise, arrive with clean, completely dry hair. One of the most persistent bridal hair myths is that dirty hair holds styling better. Modern professional products allow us to create the texture, grip and hold we need without starting with days-old hair.Avoid heavy oils, masks or leave-in treatments immediately before your session, as these can make some hairstyles harder to create and affect their longevity. If you’re planning to wear hair extensions on your wedding day, bring them to your Bridal Look Design Session whenever possible.5. Prepare Your Skin
Beautiful bridal makeup starts with well-prepared skin.In the days before your session, keep your skincare gentle and consistent. Focus on hydration and avoid experimenting with strong new products, aggressive exfoliation or treatments immediately beforehand.Arrive with clean skin and, ideally, without makeup. If you have sensitivities, allergies or any skin concerns, let your artist know before the appointment.6. Wear Something That Helps You Visualise the Look
You certainly don’t need to arrive in your wedding dress, but your clothing can make a surprising difference when you’re assessing your finished look.A white, cream or neutral top with a neckline similar to your dress can help you see the hair and makeup in a more bridal context. If you already have your veil, earrings or other important accessories, bring them along too. Seeing everything together can help us refine the final details.7. Be Honest During the Session
This is exactly the time to tell us what you think. If you would like the brows softer, the lashes lighter, the lip colour warmer or a little more volume through the hair, say so.You’re not being difficult — this feedback is part of the design process.Small adjustments during your Bridal Look Design Session help us understand exactly what makes you feel most beautiful and confident.8. Take Photos in Different Lighting
Your bridal makeup needs to look beautiful both in person and in photographs.Once your look is complete, take a few photos in natural daylight as well as indoors. Look at the overall balance rather than analysing your face from extremely close range.Remember that professional bridal makeup is designed to photograph beautifully while still looking polished in person.9. Wear Your Look for a Few Hours
If possible, don’t wash everything off as soon as you get home.Wear your hair and makeup for several hours and notice how everything feels and performs.Does the hairstyle still feel secure? Do you love the lip colour after seeing it in different lighting? Does the makeup still feel comfortable? This gives you useful information that can help us make any final refinements before the wedding.10. Come With an Open Mind
Sometimes the hairstyle you’ve saved for two years doesn’t work quite the way you imagined with your hair, face shape or dress. And sometimes a makeup colour you would never have chosen for yourself becomes your favourite part of the look.Inspiration gives us direction, but your Bridal Look Design Session gives us the opportunity to create something specifically for you. When Should You Book Your Bridal Look Design Session?
We generally recommend having your Bridal Look Design Session around one to two months before your wedding, with approximately two months beforehand being ideal for many brides.By this stage, most of the important details — your dress, accessories, wedding style and hair plans — have been decided, while there is still plenty of time to make adjustments if needed.Your Wedding Look Should Feel Like You
The purpose of a Bridal Look Design Session isn’t simply to test whether your hair and makeup “works.”It’s about taking the time to understand your vision, refine every detail and create a look that feels beautiful, comfortable and completely yours. When your wedding morning arrives, there should be no uncertainty about your bridal look. We already know what we’re creating — so you can relax, enjoy the morning and let us take care of the rest.
