Our Top Bridal Prep Secrets (You Won’t Find These on Google)

Your wedding morning should feel exciting, calm and beautifully organised — not rushed or stressful.

After hundreds of wedding mornings, our Katherine Art Makeup team has learned that it’s often the smallest details that make the biggest difference to how your bridal hair and makeup looks, lasts and photographs.

Here are some of our favourite bridal preparation secrets we wish every bride knew.

1. Wash Your Hair — Please

Forget the old advice that “dirty hair holds styling better.”

For most bridal hairstyles, we much prefer working with clean, completely dry hair. Wash your hair the day before your wedding, avoid heavy products around the roots, and make sure it is completely dry before going to bed.

We can always add the texture and grip your hairstyle needs. Starting with fresh, clean hair gives us a beautiful canvas to work with.

2. Steam Your Dresses the Night Before

This might not sound like a beauty tip, but it makes a surprising difference.

Steaming bridesmaid dresses on the wedding morning fills the getting-ready space with heat and humidity — two things freshly styled hair definitely doesn't need.

Steam dresses the night before and keep your bridal preparation space as cool and comfortable as possible.

3. Don’t Experiment With Your Skin Before the Wedding

The week before your wedding is not the time to try a new peel, aggressive facial or skincare product your skin has never experienced before.

Stick with the products and treatments you already know your skin loves.

Calm, healthy and hydrated skin gives us a far better canvas than trying to “fix” everything at the last minute.

4. Hydration Starts Before You Sit in the Makeup Chair

Beautiful skin preparation doesn't begin when your makeup artist arrives.

Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your wedding, prioritise sleep where you can and avoid overdoing alcohol the night before.

Your skin really does show the difference — and well-hydrated skin helps makeup sit beautifully.

5. Keep Wedding-Morning Skincare Simple

More skincare doesn't necessarily mean better makeup.

Unless your makeup artist has advised otherwise, a gentle cleanse and lightweight moisturiser are usually all you need on the morning of your wedding.

When you sit in our chair, we'll assess your skin and prepare it specifically for the bridal makeup we're creating.

6. Give Yourself More Time Than You Think You Need

One of the biggest differences between a stressful wedding morning and a beautiful one is simply having enough time.

A professional bridal timeline should allow for hair and makeup, getting dressed, photography and those inevitable little interruptions that happen on every wedding morning.

Your bride shouldn't be finishing hair and makeup at the exact moment she needs to leave.

We always build our bridal timelines with breathing room so the final part of your preparation can feel calm rather than rushed.

7. Protect the Calm

This might be our most important bridal preparation secret.

Choose carefully who you have around you. Keep the room comfortable. Put some music on. Have something to eat. Put your phone down occasionally.

And give yourself permission to actually enjoy the morning.

Your wedding experience begins long before you walk down the aisle.

At Katherine Art Makeup, we believe beautiful bridal hair and makeup is only one part of what we create.

How you feel while getting ready matters just as much as how you look.
